2008 Southern Trip 3 Poems on driving in VA

Weston, VA, Comfort Inn

First night
we took what the highway gave us
checking our Triple A book
and being as far
as myself could drive

First night
we just wanted a place
to hang our heads
tv is good even radio
even radio

First night
just a place to stay
before the morning
came to take us
back up onto the road

Oldies driving in VA

Once they played
“She likes Bread and butter
She likes Toast and Jam”
by The Newbeats
being the first album I ever bought
back when kids bought albums
back when I was a kid
and could get away
with being a kid

Actually, my first album
might just of been
Roy Orbison’s Greatest hits Volume 2
They were sold out of Volume 1
even then I compromised

When you turn on a radio station
and they play an oldie
that you think only you know
then they have caught you
hook line and
can I get them on the Internet
and you ride it until
the land of deep static

The land of rain and thunder

This was on the highway
so it wasn’t like
it was anything like
nervous for me to get
so I didn’t

‘course she, looking always
at the other side of things
don’t couples all have one on each side
thought she saw fear
it was just raw

After a while
it just becomes driving again
listen to music
maintain steady pace
talk barely

Later, lying in the bed hearing sounds
you sit straight up, smiling
glad you weren’t in the car when it crashed
in the dream
