Can’t we all get along, no , i don’t think so

Can’t we all just get along.

No, I don’t think so

It’s a thousand times before and

will be a thousand times again

we can meet and hold hands

and shout slogans and scream peace

and whatever else we think to do, think to do

we can hold the candles till they

burn our hands, remember those burnt

on stakes for not being “pure”

we can meet by the river and

remember unburnt witches, unburnt witches

we can talk till we’ve used up all of our words

to try and change, try and change

we can look inside our hearts and declare ourselves clean

declare ourselves clean

and believe it

Tell me when the change comes

when the heart takes over from the head

and the songs from the talk show ravings

and I can look at any you and just see you

not colour, not belief, not any other “other”

Tell me when I can embrace any others as my brother

other as my brother, any colour, any religion, any any-

without any but, without any except, without any any-

when hope wins over fear, when today wins over yester,

when love wins over hate, when change finally arrives
