Dedicated to Gil Stott
1914- May 4, 2005
Glass ball from a World’s fair
Walking through the sun in the park
Golden glass ball stunning the silence
The last world’s fair that I know of
then again
my knowledge is not big vast and impervious
like that big golden ball
my knowledge is not big vast and impervious
my wife knowing one of her many unpaid jobs
is giving me reminders of that
Wife and i walk through there
like we might of liked
to walk through San Francisco’s Treasure Island
like we might of liked
to walk through 1939
like we might of liked
some other time to call home
Gil Stott says he worked for
The League of Nations after Princeton
hoped to be there a while
doesn’t remember LofN planning Treasure Island
San Francisco International Exposition of
one nine three nine
as a celebration of many cultures
does remember being nervous
planning the LofN Eleanor Roosevelt reception
doesn’t remember Eleanor Powell Musicals
The music that he belongs to has always been
Wagner and Vivaldi with a dash of
Britten and Crumb, Britten and Crumb
Gil listens to the new
At 92, he knows he has not yet
heard everything he wishes to hear
I, my wife , walked we in the sun 70 degrees it was
Big gold ball remanant of World’s Fair
looked at her powerful gold hair then
decided I still loved her and the sound of her hair
despite her excellent memory sometimes.
Driving Gil through Delaware County, Pa.
does he see The League of Nations
in our rear view mirror
while I see Treasure Island, Eleanor Powell,
and my father’s Big Band.
In our Philadelphia
we still have the Exposition Hall
from 1926
another piece of time
we just never got around to visiting.
