Variations on a Terrier for four paws in C
For Alfie, our Terrier
We were at night it was walking
me and the terrier, we have nicknamed Mr. Alfie
twenty pounds of terror also our
little monster, our favorite terrorist
He’s a barker inside but outside
outside he attracts middle aged women
and younger and younger who think
“oh, he’s so cute”, which you can say about
any person or creature you don’t have to live with
any person or other creature you don’t have to live with
the street like we said was dark and suddenly in the middle
of the street stopped a fox like creature who watched Alfie
as a walking morsel if not a full meal
if not a full meal I shone my flashlight
and fox went to the bushes on the other side
and we proceeded hastily home with wife
just returning with her lab subtitled Rosie
later in that night the middle of
a creature howled outside our house for an hour
#2
Later in that night
a creature howled outside our house for an hour
we did not ever really see it
whether fox like or wolf like or or or–
All three of our canines barked
we did not go outside
I thought of it thought better
still think of it
Why are foxes on the streets of Swarthmore
why deer
what is it we are doing not doing
who do we share the land with
What knowledges do we no longer have
what faith have we thrown away
what was life like before cities before boroughs
what might it become again
