The Fire #1-For Lamont B Steptoe

The Fire #1
For Lamont B. Steptoe

The older I get
the older I get
The more I remember about things I can’t change
places and faces
places and faces
I can’t go back to
I can’t return to-

I remember us when we were both thirty five
there was not any reason to believe
we would approach twice that
we lived as though fourty was a curse
a place we would not enter

As one more year
as one more year
and my age changes to older still
I still believe
I still believe
in future dreams
and future schemes

Facebook told me you were sixty and eight
We must believe Facebook, one of our Computer Gods
That soon will be my age also
I have returned to the world of words
one you never left

    Robert,
    Open Mouth Poetry, early 1980s
My Darling Wife, Elizabeth June Madden-Zibman, one of the organizers of Open Mouth Poetry, died in May, 2016, after a twenty month struggle w/ a rare cancer.
In her honor, I am organizing an Open Mouth Poetry event, including an open reading, at the
West Windsor Art Center in Princeton Junction, NJ, Sunday, 30 April, 3-5pm.
The art center is within walking distance of the Princeton Junction train station, two stops from Trenton, NJ.
Would be great if a few of the Open Mouth Poetry crowd were to attend. Please spread the word.
    Thnx,
    Dan Zibman
