The Real “Lost Cause”
The real “lost cause”
has nothing to do
with plantations
or states rights
or Clark Gable in Gone with the Wind
or any of the other lies that white men say
to make themselves feel better about themselves,
rather than actually do anything.
As a white man, these are my words to say
The real “Lost Causes”
happened in the 1960’s
with civil rights
and rights to protest
and anti-war dreamers
and weren’t we starting to talk about
wimmin’s rights
(but only when we had to)
there were even some dreams about free speech
but that might have been a Poem too far
too far
None of these causes are truly lost
unless we just give them up
as dreams of youth
or ragged old raging men
who meet on street corners still screaming
’bout the old days
’bout the bold days
’bout the cold days
when we still stayed out there
holding out signs and hope
