In twenty years, none of this
goddamn stuff
is gonna matter
anyone here remember the Sputnik
Jayne Mansfield
in twenty years, it won’t bloody matter
who got to play who’s the fool
—————————————
in twenty years
Anyone here remember the Electric Prunes
Camh Ran Bay
Do I remember Georgianne, Norma,
Kristine, Carol, Joan
who said drunken what to whom, why
who still has my collected works of Faulkner
and still can’t read them
——————————————
In twenty years
whether I’m a drunk
or just a alley garden variety madman
won’t matter to the common man or woman
lying in the street
and whether you were naïve, or righteous
a harlot or a handout
will be less of history
than Tommy Eagleton’s crying in the
rain in Maine
rain in Maine
George Romney’s brain bein’ washed
Michael Jackson’s victory tour
or the nineteen eighty two NFL Strike
all of it,
including any supposed love we shared.
will just be part of common culture
consigned to the memory of those few
who knew us
as we sit in the Poets Old age home
——————————————-
Poets old age..
(will Lamont quit reading Something Broke Loose)
Someone, Barbara probably, might mention you
Was that ’82, ’83, oh yeah I remember
that was the year
Doctor J and the Sixers beat the Lakers
you know
remember that 6th game
Dawkins on Jabbar
