By the Bomb’s Pearly Light

By the bomb’s pearly light

(best read aloud)

The first bombing at the World Trade Center
A twenty year old rant

at the world’s
Blame it on the arabs
Blame it on the mob
Blame it on Rodney King
that’s why the cops beat him
they knew he would do it
Blame it on the arabs
Blame it on the mob
Blame it on Jay Smith
maybe he didn’t kill Susan Reinart
but he probably killed someone
manufacture a verdict
build a guy to fall
build a guy to take the heat
the FBI doesn’t want
and the cops shouldn’t have
it has nothing to do
with what our CIA does in other countries
nothing at all

Blame it on the Arabs
Blame it on the Mob
Blame it on Gays wanting to
walk down fifth avenue
on Saint Patrick’s Day
Blame it on Gays wanting to
join the military
Blame it on Gays
wanting to
join the mob
Blame it on Gay mob members
Blame it on AIDS
Blame it on Act-up
Blame it on the homeless
no wonder the FBI doesn’t have a
license number
homeless did it
using unlicensed bags
unlicensed shopping carts
Blame it on the old people
still living around
cluttering up our streets
Blame it on the Arabs
Blame it on the Mob
Blame it on J. Edgar Hoover
in a black chiffon dress, Clyde in a suit

J. Edgar Hoover

Clyde in a suit

Blame it on George Bush
bringing cubans in
keeping haitians out
trying to invade Cuba
invading Iraq, Panama
not invading the Savings and Loans
Blame it on Reagan supporting the Contras
Blame it on Ollie North
Blame it on Operation Rescue
Blame it on Wilson Goode
and his Philadelphia Air Farce
Blame it on condoms not in schools
Blame it on crack
Blame it on twelve years of Republican rule
in four years
we can blame it on Clinton

Blame it on the arabs
Blame it on the Mob
Blame it on anyone
that you don’t like
Blame your neighbour
call the FBI
they’ll arrest him
Blame it on your friends who dream
Blame it on yourself
for not dreaming
Blame it on your ex-husband
of any damn stripe or strife
Don’t blame it on yourself
Don’t look inside
for the hate and the fear and the lies
For the times you said chink or kike
or fag or goddamn republicans
Don’t look inside
for the person you were
for the person who died
Don’t look inside
for all the times you did wrong
and never ever cried
and cried cause you didn’t
                  cause you wouldn’t

Blame it on the arabs
Blame it on the mob
don’t blame it on money
or love torn apart
and left in bloody shreds
on the dusty steps of
the world center
or rough and tough
